Where did you get the idea for the Alcatraz series?
Brandon Sanderson
I thought of Alcatraz first, someone named after a prison, and I'm like, "Why would you be named after a prison?" And it kind of just went from there.

Was that really the end of the Evil Librarians?
No. Did you see the last page? About Bastille? Yeah. That'll be the actual end. Once I can get a Bastille book written, that'll be all right. And she's going to un-dreary-ify things, because Alcatraz has a skewed perspective of the world.
Of all the characters you've written which one has the most of you in them?
Of all the characters I've written which has the most of me in them. Boy, y'know every character is a bit of me and every character's got something that's very unlike me. Um, I really have trouble answering that. People have asked it of me before. Some days I think it's Jasnah, some days I think I'm arrogant to assume it's Jasnah. Any character I would mention it would feel like the things I like about them are the things I wish I would have, if that makes sense? I don't know if there's any one that is really just me. My mother reads the Alcatraz books and says that's me. *laughter* She really does. Like she loves those books because she says "No that's you". When I have no inhibitions and I'm not trying to be self important I just do stupid things like in the Alcatraz books so maybe Alcatraz?
Which of your characters are most like you and which would you most aspire to be like?
You know, this is a really interesting question. All of my characters are part me and part-not me, so you can point at every character and say, "Oh, that's Brandon!" Alcatraz, my mother says is most like me. *laughter* I don't know what that's saying, but those are really goofy middle-grade books about a character who can't take anything seriously. I aspire to be a little more like Sazed I think, is where I'd put that. But every character is a bit like me, and every character is something different than me that I want to explore.
There is also a thing with Alcatraz. The first time you wrote the book in third person, he was fourteen years old. And the published version, he is thirteen. And you don't explain that on the website. Why?
The publisher asked me to age him down. Generally, when you're writing a kid's book, the book is usually-- You make the age of the protagonist, minus two years, is about the age that you're writing the book for, when it's for teens. And they felt that about eleven-year-old was about where that book should be. So they asked me to age him down.
Oh and is Hoid an older Alcatraz Smedry? (This is a joke I know Alcatraz isn't in the Cosmere but with Hoid being present at the Shattering and Alcatraz's Talent being breaking things... That could include Gods.)
Re: Alcatraz. Ha!
Why did [Alcatraz] set the kitchen on fire?
He didn't intend to. It just kind of happened. That sort of thing just kind of happens sometimes. It's based off of my cousin, who accidentally set the kitchen on fire making a burrito. He started his kitchen on fire because of a flaming burrito. Be careful about-- when you're cooking your burritos.
I don't know why, but I can picture Spensa and Alcatraz hitting it off....more as friends than anything else. Do you think their personalities would clash and/or would Spensa be a little weirded out by Alcatraz?
Oh, I think they'd get along.
Why wouldn't Alcatraz write the real last book?
Why wouldn't Alcatraz write the real last book? Alcatraz has trouble just believing in himself. Despite a lot of his arrogance and sarcasm as a cover for how insecure he feels, how much he feels he's failed, and he felt like he deserved the bad ending and that's why he wouldn't write the good one.
How tall is Alcatraz in relation to Bastille?
Oh, boy, it's been a while since I wrote these. I think they're about the same height. If she's in heels, she's taller.
My boy was wondering...I said, what would you want to ask him, and he said, why is Alcatraz a bad guy but he doesn’t do bad things?
You can just say to him that Alcatraz is not a bad guy but he has a poor opinion of himself. He has bad self esteem.
