What happened to Jonathan Phaedrus. I've got three theories.

My theory is... One, he could self destruct. Two, he could become a dark hero. Three, Megan could develop her talents enough that she brings Tia back from a different dimension. Or some combination of the other three.

Prof is not heading toward evil.

Obviously.

His trajectory is turned away from that. He is very seriously disturbed by what happens. And in the next book...

Oh, there is another book?

Brandon Sanderson

If I write another book it will be about Mizzy. Her viewpoint. I haven't promised I will, but-- I mean, in the next book-- I have an outline for the next book, and in that Prof has kind of become a recluse, and things like this. It would be possible to find a Tia from another dimension and bring her through. Prof won't accept that as Tia.

See that's what I was thinking.

That's the problem.

But I can see him becoming sort of a dark brooding hero type...

Yeah, so, we'll see. I may not keep to these things when I actually write the book. Right now I have him retiring to-- not retiring, just kind of going off for a while, if that makes sense?

Maybe he'll go back to teaching science.

And not accepting the Tia from the Firefight dimension as actually Tia.

You kinda talked about where you got the idea for <highstorms>, but in the Firefight-- The Reckoners series, was there a particular character you gave them their powers because you thought that power was [cool]? 

Brandon Sanderson

So the question is: In The Reckoners, was there a particular power that I gave to someone because I just thought that power was cool. And yeah, the tensors. They can turn things to dust. For years I'd been walking around looking at our society where we have all this metal and this wood around, and things like that. I just loved the idea of just being able to turn it to dust. Maybe it's like a "reducing things to their more primal state" or whatever-- but anyway it was one of those magics that was in my head for a while. And really superheroes are magic. I don't pretend that they're science fiction, they're magic. So I just designed these magics that feel cool to me.

So, when I was reading this, Prof's power manifested, and I'm just curious, Limelight, that became his name. Were his powers green before he met David?

Brandon Sanderson

Yes. So, they picked the term "limelight" in part because his powers were green.

Questioner

But didn't David already plan to call him Limelight before? When David initially came up with the plan for getting over Steelheart, he already had the name Limelight picked out?

Brandon Sanderson

I don't think he did. But if he did, we'll just say happy coincidence. Prof did not use the name Limelight before that point. They started using it as the way that they were going to... yeah.

At the end of Calamity, I was wondering if the Prof and [David] together repair their relationship. They were kind of built up as a father/son kind of--

If I do any more books in direct sequence, what's going on with Prof would be be a factor in them. So I'm going to RAFO this just because I am planning...

Apocalypse Guard will not be a straight up follow up, but a sidestep, but I might do one someday.

...Does he ever get the chance to build a relationship with Tavi in another reality, similar to how David does with his father?
