Questioner
We’ve seen several groups throughout the cosmere that have the express purpose of collecting Investiture from the various systems. I have a fear that there is a group that is going to (either now or sometime in the future) go around collecting Investiture specifically through Hemalurgy.
Brandon Sanderson
Which is theoretically possible and horrifying to consider.
Questioner
So my question along those lines was: what happens when you use a Hemalurgic spike on an Aviar?
Brandon Sanderson
You are a very mean person. Basically, an Aviar’s got a mini-bond, so it’s gonna work in a similar way to what would happen if you were trying to do it to a Knight Radiant, which I’ve talked about in the past. Which means it is a less effective way to try to steal something with Hemalurgy, because once you’ve got two individuals involved in it… The Aviar, obviously, isn’t exactly the same. But it’s going to work, but it may not last, I guess is the answer I would give you on that.
Questioner
If that Aviar is already bonded to a person, how does that spiking affect the person they are bonded to?
Brandon Sanderson
That bond will last, but how long? Who knows. Basically, you’re gonna fool the system into thinking you’re the Aviar if you have done that. So the system is going to assume that’s what you are. They’re gonna see you as the bird if you put the spike into yourself. But, because there are multiple individuals, things like this, and you’ve got the whole thing with the Aviar and their symbiosis, and things like that. It is not gonna work nearly as well as stealing something from, say, a Feruchemist or an Allomancer.
Questioner
Is the lake where the Aviar get their powers from Survival's perpendicularity?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO. Sorry.
Ethour
Would an Aviar be capable of a spren bond?
Brandon Sanderson
What they do is the same thing, by cosmere terms. It is not as powerful; because of that it is easier to shift between people. What you gain is not as strong, but you also gain flexibility. But it would be, cosmerologically, considered the same thing.
Yurisses
Investiture on First of the Sun is associated with a Shard?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes, it is. That one is even closer associated with a Shard, the actual Investiture of the magic. Remember when I say Investiture, I mean matter, energy and magic. Sometimes the word Investiture refers just to the magic such as the Aviar and in that it is associated directly with one of the Shards...
Yurisses
Which one?
Brandon Sanderson
Patji is a Shard of Adonalsium. *silence*
Overlord Jebus
Sorry, can you say that again?
Brandon Sanderson
Patji is a Shard of Adonalsium.
Aurimus
Is that one of the Aviar?
Brandon Sanderson
No, Patji is the island.
Overlord Jebus
Island or islands?
Brandon Sanderson
The island but Patji is one of the islands.
Yurisses
It's a Shard?!
Brandon Sanderson
Yes, big asterisk! But yes.
Aurimus
Shard as in equal or Shard as in a mass of Investiture?
Brandon Sanderson
As in one of the 16 Shards of Adonalsium is represented and involved in First of the Sun. In fact, one of the letters references First of the Sun in this *Indicates Oathbringer*
Sorry, I probably killed some theories on that one.
Overlord Jebus
Yup, but by doing that you've confirmed some as well so it's fine!
Ethour
If you fed a lerasium bead to an Aviar, would it become an Allomancer?
Brandon Sanderson
Oh, wow, what a great question! RAFO!
Mark Lindberg
The red bird in Rhythm of War that Lift saves... Is that Magellan?
Brandon Sanderson
It is not Magellan, the coloring is slightly different. But it is inspired by my love of parrots. So yes, the colorings are slightly different from Magellan's.
Mark Lindberg
Is that an Aviar?
Brandon Sanderson
It is an Aviar.
R'Shara
The Aviar that we see in Sixth of the Dusk were all fruit eaters, they all have to eat the fruit that the grubs live in. However, Mraize's Aviar seems a lot more like a predator than a herbivore.
Brandon Sanderson
It is!
R'Shara
Did his species become extinct or is it a unique Aviar like Sak?
Brandon Sanderson
Neither. But yes, it is a carnivoristic Aviar. I will confirm that, which it's not confirming much, you guys already knew that. But that is indeed what is going on there.
Kogiopsis
Are there any parallels between the fish in the Purelake and the Aviar in Sixth of the Dusk?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes.
Questioner
Is a chull able to receive some form of Investiture? ...I'm thinking of Scadrial... Would it have the presence of mind to be able to use the abilities?
Brandon Sanderson
Not as it is right now. But you can see in the way that Ryshadium are working that we have animals that are reaching beyond-animal intelligence. Aviar are the same way. And it is possible to assume that you could get to the point where you could use such powers. But none of them are there yet. But the Aviar kind of use their powers, so I guess some of them are. So, yes, I will say that's possible.
Questioner
Do we know the other talents of Dusk's uncle's Aviar? Because he had three.
Brandon Sanderson
I don't think I've revealed those.
Trevor Allen
There is certain type of chicken that makes two appearances in Words of Radiance, is that chicken an Aviar?
Brandon Sanderson
No, but good question.
Questioner
If an aviar's Connection or Identity were to be manipulated in any way, would it change the abilities that it could grant?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes.
Questioner
If you were to cook them and eat them, would it give somebody who could turn those calories into Investiture any additional abilities?
Brandon Sanderson
Unlikely.
PrinceDusty
You've talked about some of the correlation between Aviar abilities and Allomantic abilities. Are there any Aviar abilities that are not related to Allomancy, or what are some other abilities that we might see?
Brandon Sanderson
I'll RAFO that, mostly because I want to be free to pick and choose from my list as I canonize them. A lot of Aviar abilities are Cognitive type stuff, just from the way I built them so I can separate the magics. The whole Seeker/coppercloud thing, a lot of Aviar abilities are going to be riffs on that, or they're going to be riffs on glimpsing the Spiritual a little bit. And you see a lot of that in Allomancy. There are abilities that they have that you won't see in Allomancy.
The trick is Allomany is so broad. I built the main magic systems to be able to get a little bit of everything. You see the same thing in Stormlight. So seeing Aviar abilities that you haven't seen some version of it in Mistborn or Stormlight, it's going to be... Mistborn and Stormlight touch on all different parts of the magic system on purpose. But I think you will eventually see some that don't. But they're all going to work on the Cosmere magic, so you can say they're all related.
PrinceDusty
Where might we see them?
Brandon Sanderson
Aviar are known in the cosmere but are very, very rare. But as you move forward in the future, perhaps you'll see them more often.
JoyBlu
So the color of the green chicken. In Sixth of the Dusk, there's a green and white Aviar and there's a green and red type of plume. Is green important?
Brandon Sanderson
I'll RAFO that.
Worldhopper1990
Hm… I don’t understand why Lift’s Aviar is missing and she suspects it’s been taken when she was put in a cage and it was hurt and scared and needed help, when in RoW in chapter 116, Dalinar tells Kaladin that Lift has started carrying a red chicken around.
So.. either Dalinar was wrong? Lift… forgot magically? The Ghostbloods could have found it later, but then Lift is wrong about the timing, somehow. It could be hiding like Kokerlii can (except it shouldn’t be the same way) and evade detection by the Sibling, but Lift would still be wrong about the timing. Or there’s a continuity error here? Any obvious or potential explanation I’m missing?
Peter Ahlstrom
Yeah, we try to avoid retcons whenever possible, but this one was unavoidable. It's the only line we had to go back to Rhythm of War and change after Wind and Truth was written.
Questioner
Sak, Dusk's non-native Aviar. That ability is very, very similar to Allomantic electrum.
Brandon Sanderson
It is!
Questioner
And his other Aviar is very, very similar to Allomantic copper.
Brandon Sanderson
It is.
Questioner
Is there a connection between those two, deeper? Or is it--
Brandon Sanderson
will RAFO that. Let's just say it is an intentional reference, but I'm not going to say whether it's a direct connection to Scadrial magic systems or more that fundamental rules of magics can reproduce one another. We have seen multiple instances of Lightweaving, so-- It's one of those two... That at least narrows it down for you.
Argent
Are there Aviar who grant Physical abilities?
Brandon Sanderson
Technically, yes.
Argent
'Cause we’ve seen Spiritual, we've seen Cognitive...
Brandon Sanderson
Yes, there are.
that_guy2010
The type of fabrial mentioned in the epigraph: Is that the same type of device used in Sixth of the Dusk to locate Aviars?
Brandon Sanderson
It is not the same device, but there are similarities.
Is there a connection between Sak's talent and Allomantic electrum? If so, what is it?
Yes. Reading a person's spiritual connections and possibilities. Similar powers, as is atium.
Questioner
In Sixth of the Dusk, the Aviar, they [ate all those worms]. What happens if someone else eats the worms on Patji? Do they get powers?
Brandon Sanderson
Has-- It doesn’t work for a human. They’ve tried that. But there might be something more there.
Windrunner
As you've stated that the magic of First of the Sun is natural and independent of any particular Shard, what is the nature of the pool on Patji? Is it also a natural manifestation of magic, a perpendicularity, or simply a pool like any other?
Brandon Sanderson
It's a natural manifestation, but on a much smaller scale than you might find on other worlds.
Questioner
What happens if you eat an Aviar?
Brandon Sanderson
Normal things happen; you would not gain the powers. You would be a cruel person because Aviar are not of animal intelligence. You would not gain the powers
JoyBlu
Is Mraize's Aviar from First of the Sun or is it from another planet?
Brandon Sanderson
If it's called an Aviar, its origin is First of the Sun.
Questioner
On Sixth of the Dusk, First of the Sun, if humans eat the fruit or the seed of the worms, will they gain Investiture?
Brandon Sanderson
No. They tried that. Someone has tried that.
Questioner
Has Hoid been there?
Brandon Sanderson
That's a RAFO.
Questioner
(paraphrased)
If I wanted to Hemalurgically acquire a power from First of the Sun, which metal would the spike need to be?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
This is going to be pretty complicated, but several metals would work.
Questioner
(paraphrased)
Would it involve Connection between the person being spiked and the bird?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Well it would be even harder than on Roshar, where you need to somehow spike the spren and also the Radiant. You would need to spike the bird and steal the power, but also spike the person and steal Connection.
JoyBlue
*written* What Aviar power does Mraize's green chicken grant?
Brandon Sanderson
*written* RAFO!
*spoken* But it is an Aviar, so it does have one.
Questioner
If a thieving crew had an Aviar of the breed of Kokerlii, would that be able to function as a Smoker?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes.
Questioner
Can you Hemalurgy Aviar?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes. You could.
Questioner
So you could take a Aviar Hemalurgic spike and put it on a cat and make a Aviar cat?
Brandon Sanderson
See, this is where it gets-- you heard the asterisk in my-- These sorts of things-- It wouldn't do what you wanted to. But this is possible.
Questioner
If a kandra imitated an Aviar and went and got the parasite, would it be able to mimic the powers?
Brandon Sanderson
No.
Titan Arum
If someone on Nalthis had an aviar like Kokerli, would an Awakener’s lifesense work, or would the person be perceived as drab?
Brandon Sanderson
Yeah, the life sense would not work. Good question.
AndrewStirlingMacDonald
So there are many--According to Sixth of the Dusk, there are many commonly known aviar talents, can you give us a couple? Like examples we haven’t seen yet?
Brandon Sanderson
Those are from the notes, I’d have to dig them out. Let’s just say they’ll be very useful for navigation in the future.
Questioner
In the past, you've said that kandra have size limitations. They can't just lop off a chunk and make a squirrel or anything like that. If a kandra was in full human form, somehow consumed and absorbed an aviar, kept it fully attached to their shoulder, it wouldn't be able to fly off but it was still attached to them, they're one contiguous body, could they get the abilities of that aviar?
Brandon Sanderson
No, good question. They would have to-- They're just replicating the body, they're not replicating the soul.
JoyBlu
I dressed up as Kokerlii from Sixth of Dusk. I want to know, red and green are in the book are these [rainbow-colored array of feathers] appropriate, or not?
Brandon Sanderson
Kokerlii I had not imagined as fully rainbow colored.
JoyBlu
So red and green, were there other colors?
Brandon Sanderson
I was imaging red on green.
JoyBlu
What about the green Aviar? If I wanted to make a green aviar costume? Green and white?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes that would work.
JoyBlu
Is it just those two colors? Are there different shades of green?
Brandon Sanderson
There are aviar that are like this *gestures to JoyBlu's costume*, full parrot. Totally legit. But There are a lot of breeds of aviar.
JoyBlu
*inaudible* What would be the best <pattern>?
Brandon Sanderson
Solid colored feathers *inaudible*
Podman36
You said before that if a human ate an Aviar worm, it would not do anything, right? Someone's tried that? What would happen if a baby...?
Brandon Sanderson
Still wouldn't work. The gut flora is too different. And they're not part of the symbiotic life cycle there. That system has evolved to the symbiosis that it has, and humans are too new to trying to make that work.
Humans are not new on the planet, but they are not part of that system.
Podman36
Could they be trained into it?
Brandon Sanderson
Training wouldn't work.
Podman36
Not like training, but through generations.
Brandon Sanderson
Through generations, that would be theoretically possible.
TeeJay
(paraphrased)
Gereh, the Feruchemist in Rhythm of War, did his Aviar grant him physical abilities?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
No, that Aviar has mind abilities.
Hoidonalsium
Is Mraize's strange chicken Invested? Like the birds of Sixth of the Dusk?
Brandon Sanderson
It is an Aviar.
Questioner
And then is there a connection between Aviars, copperclouds, aluminum, and the yellow spren, life sense, seeking?
Brandon Sanderson
Yeah, yeah all that, there are some relationships there.
Questioner
So they all pretty much would affect each other?
Brandon Sanderson
Ummm, yes, yes.
JoyBlu
Okay, A larkin and an aviar. Could you tell us how they're related - are they a bit similar? Other than that they both fly.
Brandon Sanderson
I would not call them terribly similar. A larkin is a specific type of creature that feeds off of Investiture. And there are some other things like that in the Cosmere. But aviar don't do that. Aviar have a symbiosis with an Invested entity. Aviar are more like, they're kind of weird because they fulfill both the role of a spren, but also the person that's bonding the spren. They're an intermediary.
JoyBlu
Okay. And larkins don't have feathers, right?
Brandon Sanderson
Larkins do not have feathers. They look like little... They look like wasps.
JoyBlu
Like wasps? That little?
Brandon Sanderson
No, not that size, but that's the look of them. They're in the picture in the front of Way of Kings, the magic map. If we have Way of Kings here... We can grab it for you. If you go to my website for the art for Way of Kings, look up "Way of Kings art archive" on my website. It's not the cover, it's on the magic, the double eye symbol of the Knights Radiant in the inside cover flap. There's a pair of larkin there.
