Questioner
Is a chull able to receive some form of Investiture? ...I'm thinking of Scadrial... Would it have the presence of mind to be able to use the abilities?
Brandon Sanderson
Not as it is right now. But you can see in the way that Ryshadium are working that we have animals that are reaching beyond-animal intelligence. Aviar are the same way. And it is possible to assume that you could get to the point where you could use such powers. But none of them are there yet. But the Aviar kind of use their powers, so I guess some of them are. So, yes, I will say that's possible.
Questioner
I was wondering if Rayse and Ryshadium, is there a connection like for Aon and Aona, Ati and atium?
Brandon Sanderson
For what? For Rayse and Ryshadium? No.
Sweetness
Were the Ryshadium artificially created or enhanced, or are they natural?
Brandon Sanderson
Oh, RAFO! Good question!
CCQ
You said that Ryshadium experience sentience through a spren. But I just didn't understand how that's possible. Most of them are through tension, gravitation, *inaudible*... nothing Cognitive.
Brandon Sanderson
Yes, yes, yes. So all-- so non-sapient creatures that get Invested in don't gain powers until they gain *inaudible*.
CCQ
How does that fit into the larger picture?
Brandon Sanderson
Yeah, how does that fit? It's mostly-- you can start seeing that-- things that forces are adapting to the Roshar ecology. Does that make sense? Because a lot of Rosharan-- other creatures-- have bonds with spren. Very common. And so--
CCQ
I know. I noticed the chasmfiend *inaudible*, whatever you want to call it. I don't know how that works.
Brandon Sanderson
Yeah, yeah, yeah. You'll see the next book kind of explores it a little bit. But yes... but yeah. I'm just going to leave it at that.
Questioner
Will we be finding out more about the Ryshadium?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes, but it's one of those things we're gonna find out in little bits here and there. I mean, I think I've told people they are animals that have managed to form a spren bond, which has given them more-than-animal intelligence. It is the symbiosis there that is letting them. So if they did not have the spren bond, they wouldn't be--
AmbitionsAvatar
Have we ever seen the spren that are in a relationship with Ryshadium on the page at any point?
Brandon Sanderson
I think you have, but I can't 100% say. I'm sorry. I think you have, but that one comes with a big asterisk...
Questioner
The Ryshadium mounts. Are they actually-- Is there an actual bond, like the Nahel bond?
Brandon Sanderson
They are slightly Invested through a symbiotic relationship on Roshar that gives them better-than-average animal intelligence.
Questioner
What about a person makes a Ryshadium choose them? And why are so many in Dalinar’s family…
Brandon Sanderson
I will talk about that eventually. That is a RAFO.
Questioner
Where in Roshar do Ryshadiums come from?
Brandon Sanderson
That's a RAFO. I will answer it soon.
Questioner
Will we find out in Stormlight 3?
Brandon Sanderson
Yeah.
Questioner
Are any of the fish in the Purelake Invested?
Brandon Sanderson
The fish in the Purelake, like the Ryshadium and other things you will see, are not 100% normal.
Questioner
Does Gallant's eyes being rainbow have any cosmere significance?
Brandon Sanderson
It is an indication of his spren bond; it's a way that I was getting across that. A lot of times, when you see kind of mother-of-pearl or a rainbow shimmer of luminescence, that is an indication of something happening with Investiture in the cosmere. You'll see it in White Sand being used; you see it periodically in manifestations of the Nahel bond, and that sort of thing.
Questioner
I was wondering about the Ryshadium. So, they can’t be tamed, so where do you go to [get them from]?
Brandon Sanderson
You will find out some of this in Book 3.
Questioner
What effects does a spren bond have on a Ryshadium? Sapience, or more?
Brandon Sanderson
It increases their intelligence a great deal and gives them a little extra hardiness to survive in Roshar. And in exchange, the spren gets pulled into the Physical Realm, which they really like.
Questioner
Do Ryshadium have gemhearts?
Brandon Sanderson
Um... I'll RAFO that for now. I'm just kind of staying really dodgy about Ryshadium, on purpose. I will dig into them later on.
Questioner
We see, in Secret History, all the people going Beyond after they die. Do all the victims go there? Or just people? Just sentients? Would a Ryshadium go the Beyond, if it died.
Brandon Sanderson
Um-- Yes.
Questioner
What about, like, a rockbud, or a chasmfiend?
Brandon Sanderson
Um, that, you're gonna have to ask the philosophers about. Because, if it happens, it happens really fast, so they have trouble spotting it.
Questioner #1 (in Mistborn cosplay)
(paraphrased)
Do Ryshadium exist because of a spren bond, like greatshells?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Yea, they evolved symbiotically with spren, unlike other horses. They can still mate with other horses, but they are genetically distinct.
Tom Goldthwait
At any point in the Rosharan history, was it possible to form a Nahel bond without swearing oaths?
Brandon Sanderson
"Nahel bond" is the phrase used for a bond between a spren and a being from the Physical Realm. That is the definition of it. So the answer to that is yes; it's currently possible right now. It's how greatshells exist and grow to the size they do. It's how Ryshadium exist. Those are Nahel bonds also.
What you're asking is if a sapient spren, a spren and a sapient individual, forming what we currently call the Radiant bond, which has access to much greater power; was that possible without swearing oaths? Yes and no. The formalization of the oaths and the Orders aligned with certain spren did take a little bit of time to come together. It was possible to form a Nahel bond before that, but it was not a Radiant bond accessing the levels of powers that are currently possible. So it's another one of these "yes and no" answers, if that makes any sense.
You could find a Nahel bond... In fact, many would call the bond between the singers and the spren that give them forms Nahel bonds. It may not fit fully into the categorization that most people would use it for, but you could kinda call that the same thing.
Questioner
Did every Order of Knights Radiant have Ryshadium?
Brandon Sanderson
The Ryshadium were a separate not always-- not just associated with Knights Radiant.
