Allik Neverfar has those medallions that let him to talk to people in their language, but he has an accent because it knows his parents aren't from that area. So I'm wondering, if he and his parents are both using those in a foreign land, does he no longer have an accent and his parents would?
Brandon Sanderson
I would say that they would both still have an accent.
GyozaGuy
So it's not connected--
Brandon Sanderson
It's connecting to the soul of his parents and it's kinda picking that out. There are ways around that. If you are really good with the way Connection works and things like that. Obviously you've seen Hoid speaking without an accent all over the place. The medallions are kind of a crude, early version of doing that sort of thing, not really in control of the magic more, and so I wanted to build in some little indications that things are not quite as fluid as they will someday get.
GyozaGuy
So it's more of a hack and not a rewrite of the Connection.
Brandon Sanderson
Yeah, exactly.
Bluebar
It's not a direct link from them to the Investiture.
Brandon Sanderson
Yeah. If you find someone who's using the magic themselves, you'll see that they-- like Dalinar didn't have, the people who spoke with Dalinar didn't have accents when he was using the same sort of Connection magic to give them linguistics and things like that.
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
There is a way to get a non-powered person to access a metalmind.
controlled_slide
So nicrosil. Wax couldn’t use a blank gold metalmind because he’s not a gold ferring, why can he use a blank nicrosil metalmind?
Brandon Sanderson
So this will all come out eventually but the idea is there are certain ways to connect yourself to magic, to hack the magic and make it think you have the Spiritual DNA that you don’t actually have. And this is one of the ways.
controlled_slide
So then the people who made this medallion have this thing that a regular nicrosil Ferring couldn’t--
Brandon Sanderson
Yeah, you’re picking up on it. We’ll dig deeper into it as the series progresses.
Genesis
Can someone using a medallion store Feruchemical traits in a separate metalmind (e.g. not the medallion itself)?
Can Inquisitors store Feruchemical traits in separate metalminds (excluding their spikes)?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes and yes.
Calderis
Does the nicrosil portion of the medallions function identitically to how a Soulbearer Ferring would use Nicrosil?
Brandon Sanderson
Not exactly. The medallion is a little more restrictive, for one thing.
WeiryWriter
For the Coppermind: What should we call the page about the Southerner medallions? (or: How would Khriss refer to them in an Ars Arcanum?)
Brandon Sanderson
Let's call them "unsealed metalminds" though Era 3 might use slang.
Questioner
Does creating unsealed metalmind involve Feruchemical duralumin?
Brandon Sanderson
(hesitating)...Yes. I will write it all out for you eventually. I want to get at least one more book done, then you find out exactly why and how.
Questioner
Because I was pretty confused about the Investiture and Spiritweb...
Brandon Sanderson
Here is the reason I'm kind of hesitant of this, [why not you just RAFO this one right now], but it is not a RAFO, because it is like it's a secret. I want to write it out exactly how it happens, because I have it in my notes in bullet points and it's complicated, right? Cause I want some of the things in the magic system as be as complicated as for instance explaining how a computer works right now. You can do it, but you know...I want the magic to start getting that technical if that makes sense. When you say "involve", right, that's a big word. Why just don't you let me, after lost metal...if I haven't released it, you have permission to come to me and say: "Brandon, you said you would release this, you haven't yet [...]" and I will give to you the bullet point flowchart of how you build the unkeyed metalminds.
Questioner
Do Honorblades bestow their abilities similar to an Identity-free nicrosilmind with other Metalborn abilities?
Brandon Sanderson
Yeah, these are working on similar principles. Same principle, divergent applications by the magic system, but yeah, I would say, they come back to the same principles.
Pagerunner
At the end of Bands of Mourning, they couldn't refill the heat medallions, was that the brass, or the nicrosil they were having trouble with?
Brandon Sanderson
Let's RAFO that.
muh_vehicles
A while back you said that if you didn't reveal how medallions are made after The Lost Metal, we could bug you for the step-by-step process. Can you tell us now?
Brandon Sanderson
So I tried to find my little write-up on this and I can't find it. So I have to re-write it up. You can bug me but I'm not going to get it yet. It needs to be canonized for certain things that are coming up very soon, so I need to write it all out again. Double-check that I run it through continuity, that it is right. The more we do these things the more complicated it gets, and the more like computer programming in a world using physics that don't exist it gets. Which is fun! That's the feature, not the bug, that it gets really finicky how these things work. But it means I have to do that whole writeup again. It was several pages. So I am going to do that again, I have to have it in hand before I can do Era Three. Bug me again when I'm writing Era Three. Sorry.

When you tap the nicrosil portion of a medallion, will it run out over time? Or is it like a coppermind, where something discrete is taken, used, and returned?
Brandon Sanderson
Good question! Like a coppermind.
Doc_John
Hey, you've mentioned before that for the Lord Ruler to be able to be a Mistborn and a Feruchemist he had to alter his spiritweb in some way because a person can't normally hold all 32 powers. What about a Mistborn Ferring? Would it be possible for someone born with all 16 powers of Allomancy to also be born with a Ferring power? What about a Ferring Misting? Thanks
Brandon Sanderson
This is possible now, when it once wasn't, but would be very unlikely.
Doc_John
Just as getting a Mistborn nowadays is very unlikely but that hasn't stopped people from trying ;) ;)
Follow up, having past a certain number of medallions doesn't work currently in world. Is this because of this same issue? Or is it more of a technical hurdle with the medallion?
Brandon Sanderson
The core root is the same issue, but it's not insurmountable with technological improvements.
Yata
If you have 32 Misting and Ferring, every kind possible, without using Hemalurgy, you can craft a medallion? Without the aftermath of the--
Brandon Sanderson
So could you craft a medallion... without-- oh. That should be possible, but this is one of the things where I have to dig out the notes and double-check myself. But this should be possible.
Questioner
How can everyone tap nicrosil without being a nicrosil Ferring? Is that a Read And Find Out?
Brandon Sanderson
That's kind of a Read And Find Out.
Questioner
I assume the next book, probably?
Brandon Sanderson
We'll dig into that.
Pod
*Written* How many people are intentionally killed in the process of creating a typical medallion?
Brandon Sanderson
*Written* Not as many as you think.
ArgentSun
Are there any genetic restrictions, Spiritual or otherwise, to using an unsealed metalmind? For example, if Vivenna got her hands on one of Allik's translation medallions, could she use it? Could Iyatil?
Brandon Sanderson
No, there are not. People from off planet could use one of these metalminds. Good question. I think that's what you're asking. Barring Elantris, most of these things don't have this kind of region lock on the magics, and the unkeyed Investiture is not going to have a problem with that. That's kind of the whole point. It extends to people from off planet.
Questioner
Could non-Scadrians use Southern Scadrian medallions, and if so, could Drabs, too?
Brandon Sanderson
Oh, the amulets? Yes, yes they could.
Questioner
And Drabs, also?
Brandon Sanderson
Could Drabs use one of the amulets and make them work? Yeah, Drabs could. They're missing a little bit of something I'll explain eventually, but they could make those work.
